How to Validate a SWIFT/BIC Code
A SWIFT/BIC code has a strict ISO 9362 structure. You can validate it by checking the format first and then confirming the bank and branch details.
Format checks
A valid code must be 8 or 11 characters. The first four characters should be letters, the next two should be a country code, and the remaining characters should be letters or digits.
- Length: 8 or 11 characters
- Characters 1-4: bank code
- Characters 5-6: country code
- Characters 7-8: location code
- Characters 9-11: optional branch code
Database checks
A code can be correctly formatted but not belong to an active bank. Use a lookup tool to confirm that the bank, city and country match the payment instructions.
Final confirmation
Even if a code is valid, confirm it with the receiving bank before sending an important payment. Bank mergers and branch changes can make older codes obsolete.
